ENG Located in the heart of the gulf of Portoferraio, Italy, this Roman Villa continues to be an active archeological site. The villa ruins date back to the first century b.C. and it is presumed to have belonged to the ancient Valeri family. For our design of the arrival center, great care needs to be given to the ground- the building must minimally insert itself onto the site so as not to damage any of these remains. While being an active site of archeological work, the villa also greets visitors to see and learn about its history. Therefore, it requires an information center and space that welcomes people to visit the ruins as well as enjoy a public area where they can try local foods under a shaded canopy, organize educational workshops with children and host different events related to the history of the site. The proposal design incorporates features that provide easier accessibility to cyclists, and visitors using public transportation and is dog friendly.

ITA Situata nel golfo di Portoferraio, all’isola d’Elba, la Villa romana delle Grotte è un sito archeologico molto frequentato. Appartenuta all'antica famiglia dei Valeri, risale al I secolo a.C. Per la nostra progettazione del Centro di Accoglienza Visitatori è necessario rispettare vincoli archeologici: la struttura deve inserirsi nel sito in modo non invasivo.  Inoltre, la Villa rimarrà aperta a residenti e turisti anche durante gli scavi archeologici attualmente in corso. È richiesto un centro di accoglienza e biglietteria con spazi condivisi per godere di un'area pubblica dove si possano organizzare in sicurezza e praticità eventi a tema archeologico, attività didattica, degustazioni enogastronomiche locali sotto una tettoia ombreggiata. Il design della proposta incorpora funzionalità e comodità.  Privilegiati saranno gli aspetti della mobilità sostenibile, per incoraggiare una più facile accessibilità a ciclisti e visitatori che utilizzano i mezzi pubblici.  Ci sarà uno spazio dedicato agli amici dei cani.
