NCARB’s 2024 Annual Business Meeting Workshop

Should we regulate AI use in architecture?

This open question brought to a series of great conversations at the 2024 NCARB Annual Business Meeting in Chicago earlier this month. George was invited to lead the conversation in three workshops on this topic and to collect some insightful data. Some of the workshop outcomes he outlined were to:

- Map out scenarios of AI’s potential impact on architecture;

- Unpack what regulating AI use in architecture could look like;

- Explore how AI could impact education and licensure;

- Discuss how and whether NCARB should regulate AI.

This event was organized and moderated by Andy McIntyre from NCARB and Gabriella Bermea provided insightful comments in the panel discussions.

While the EU AI Act paving the way of AI regulation, the US has so far taken on a much more industry led approach. What is clear is that national and state professional or regulatory boards such as NCARB for architecture should prepare to be adaptive in learning about and in time responding to this rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
